If you’ve started digging into why you’re tired, losing hair, or just feel “off,” you’ve probably landed on a dozen articles that all say the same three things: eat more meat, watch your stress, maybe try a supplement. None of them really explain why this happens to women much more often, or what’s actually going on underneath those generic suggestions.

Here’s what I think gets missed most. Diet matters, but it’s rarely the whole picture for the women I work with. Your genetics, menstrual cycle, birth control, pregnancy, and even chronic stress all move your zinc levels in ways that have nothing to do with what’s on your plate. Some of this is backed by research that almost never makes it into general health content, and I want to walk you through all of it here.

The Short Answer: What’s Actually Behind Most Cases

Most cases of zinc deficiency in women come down to some combination of four things: not getting enough zinc from food, losing more of it than usual through hormonal changes or medical conditions, your body absorbing less of what you do eat, or your zinc and copper falling out of balance with each other. While these requirements are shockingly low, what I rarely see clearly explained is how many of these causes are specific to being female. I always start by looking at the full picture of zinc deficiency symptoms alongside what’s happening hormonally, because in my experience the two are almost never separate stories.

Not Eating Enough Zinc, and Why That’s More Common in Women Than You’d Think

The most basic cause is still the most common one: not taking in enough zinc to begin with. The NIH points to a few groups at higher risk, including people who eat mostly plant-based, since beans, grains, and nuts contain phytates that block a meaningful portion of the zinc those foods would otherwise provide. Zinc absorption also goes up when it’s eaten alongside animal protein, which is part of why a diet that’s both plant-heavy and protein-light tends to compound the problem rather than just contributing one issue at a time.

What I see beyond that NIH list is a pattern specific to women: chronic undereating. Years of restrictive dieting, intermittent fasting pushed further than it should be, or a history of disordered eating all show up in my clients as a quiet, ongoing zinc shortfall, simply because the total volume of food, and therefore the total zinc, has been too low for too long. This isn’t about any one diet being wrong. It’s about how often “eating less” becomes the default goal for women in a way it rarely does for men, and how much that adds up over years rather than showing up as an obvious, single deficiency event.

Zinc is critical for creating hormones, enzymes, and neurotransmitters. Without adequate bioavailable sources of zinc, it can be difficult for women to function optimally. Many women are also unaware that our food supply is sadly lacking in important nutrients, making supplemental zinc important.

Hormonal Shifts Across Your Reproductive Life Change How Much Zinc You Need

This is the section most articles skip entirely, and it’s where I think the real answers usually are.

Your Cycle Itself

A 2022 study tracking women’s micronutrient levels across the menstrual cycle found that zinc concentrations dropped by 6.6 percent between the early follicular phase and the midluteal phase. In that same study, 22 percent of participants already had low zinc at the start of their cycle, before any of that decline even happened. (Source: PubMed, 2022)

That matters for a practical reason. If your zinc gets tested on a random day without anyone asking where you are in your cycle, the number you get back may not reflect your actual baseline.

Hormonal Birth Control, Copper IUDs, and the Copper-Zinc Connection

I think this is the single most underdiscussed cause on this entire list. A study comparing healthy women on oral contraceptives to those who weren’t found serum copper levels roughly 57 percent higher in the birth control group, along with notably higher ceruloplasmin, the protein that carries copper through your blood. Zinc levels in that same study were only slightly lower in the birth control group by comparison. (Source: PubMed)

Here’s why that’s the part worth paying attention to. Estrogen drives copper up, and copper and zinc compete with each other in your body. When copper climbs as much as it tends to on a hormone or copper IUD, this is exactly the kind of copper toxicity pattern I look for in clients who’ve used hormonal birth control for years, even when their zinc intake hasn’t changed at all.

The copper IUD deserves its own callout here, because it works through a completely different mechanism than hormonal methods. Rather than raising copper indirectly through estrogen, a copper IUD releases copper directly into your body on a continuous basis for as long as it’s in place, often five to ten years. In women whose bodies don’t clear copper efficiently, that steady exposure can push levels well beyond what a “non-hormonal” method would lead anyone to expect. My colleagues at Mensah Medical have documented that copper toxicity can contribute to anxiety, panic, sleep disruption, and paranoia, and in more severe cases, psychosis, alongside the kind of irritability and rage that often gets dismissed as “just stress” or “just hormones.” (Source: Mensah Medical) I’ve gone deeper on the copper IUD specifically elsewhere on this site, since it’s one of the most common questions I get from clients who started feeling like a different person after getting one placed.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

(Source: NIH) At the same time, your copper naturally rises during pregnancy due to hormonal shifts, the same estrogen-driven mechanism behind the birth control connection above, and for some women it doesn’t fully settle back down right after birth.

I see this combination show up constantly in the months after a baby arrives. If you’ve noticed hair shedding, fatigue that doesn’t match how much you’re sleeping, or mood changes that feel bigger than typical exhaustion, the connection between postpartum copper imbalance and depression is worth understanding on its own, separate from just “new parent tired.”

Zinc Deficiency Can Also Be Genetic

Not every case of zinc deficiency traces back to diet, hormones, or a medical condition you can point to. Sometimes the explanation is written into your genes. The clearest example is acrodermatitis enteropathica, a rare inherited disorder caused by a mutation in the SLC39A4 gene, which codes for the zinc transporter your intestine relies on to absorb the mineral in the first place. People with this mutation can eat plenty of zinc and still become severely deficient, because the transport system itself isn’t working correctly. (Source: PubMed)

That extreme example matters because it proves the underlying point: genetics can determine how much zinc your body needs and how well you absorb what you take in, even without a rare diagnosis attached to it. This is where I think the standard recommendations fall short for a lot of the women I work with. Conditions like pyrrole disorder and methylation imbalances both run in families and show up again and again across generations in my client history intakes, and both change your baseline zinc requirements in ways a single generic recommended intake was never designed to capture.

What I See That Most Advice Misses

Keep in mind that NIH requirements can be misleading and do not take into account individual biochemistry, which often calls for therapeutic doses beyond a low, generic threshold. For example, if you have pyrrole disorder or a methylation imbalance, your zinc requirements will be much higher for optimum health.

Medical Conditions and Medications That Drain Zinc

Beyond hormones, a few medical factors show up again and again. Digestive conditions like Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and chronic diarrhea all reduce how much zinc your body actually absorbs, regardless of how much you’re eating. Bariatric and other gastrointestinal surgeries work against you the same way, since they often remove or bypass the exact stretch of intestine zinc absorption depends on. Heavy alcohol use does something similar, both reducing absorption and increasing how much zinc you lose through urine. Certain medications matter too, including long-term use of diuretics and some antibiotics, which can pull zinc levels down over time. (Source: NIH)

None of these are exotic. They’re common, and they’re worth ruling in or out before assuming diet alone explains what’s going on.

Chronic Stress Plays a Bigger Role Than You’d Think

Stress causes your body to deplete nutrients, especially zinc, at a remarkably high rate. When you’re under chronic stress, your adrenal glands keep cortisol elevated for far longer than they’re meant to, and that process increases how much zinc you lose through urine while also redirecting the zinc you do have toward your body’s immediate stress response instead of its everyday functions. The result is a faster, steeper drop in zinc than diet alone would ever predict.

That depletion doesn’t stop with the mineral itself, it sets off a cascade. Zinc is involved in producing GABA, the neurotransmitter responsible for calming your nervous system down, along with supporting the pathways that make serotonin and dopamine. Once zinc starts running low, your body can’t produce these calming neurotransmitters at the rate it needs to. Lower GABA makes it harder to settle your nervous system, lower serotonin and dopamine make mood and motivation harder to regulate, and all of that feeds straight back into more perceived stress and more cortisol release. This becomes a loop for a lot of the women I work with. Chronic stress lowers zinc, low zinc lowers the very neurotransmitters that help you cope with stress, and that feeds right back into more stress. If anxiety or low mood have been part of your picture too, it’s worth knowing that copper toxicity’s connection to depression and anxiety often travels alongside this same zinc pattern rather than separately from it.

How to Know If One of These Applies to You

Reading a list of causes is one thing. Knowing which one actually applies to you is another. Since zinc and copper move together so often in women specifically, especially around hormonal birth control, pregnancy, and chronic stress, I always recommend a copper and zinc panel rather than a zinc test alone. Looking at both minerals and the ratio between them tells a far more complete story than either number by itself.
